What Sondola reads from Google Play

  • Android crash rate
  • ANR rate

What you need

  • Admin access to your Google Play developer account and a Google Cloud project you can create a service account in.

Collection timing and the period a reading covers are separate. Check the source's data-through date as well as the metric's reporting period.

Connect Google Play in 4 steps

  1. Turn on the reporting API

In the Google Cloud project, enable the Google Play Developer Reporting API.

Google Cloud: Play Developer Reporting API ↗
  2. Create a service account and a key

IAM and Admin, Service accounts, Create service account. Then Keys, Add key, Create new key, JSON. Paste the file here.

  3. Invite it in Play Console

Play Console, Users and permissions, Invite new users. Enter the service account email and give it View app information (read-only) for your app.

App permission: View app information (read-only).Play Console: users and permissions ↗
  4. Name the app

Paste the app's package name, like com.example.app.

Enter credentials only in your Sondola workspace. Keep keys out of screenshots, public repositories and support messages.

What Sondola asks you for

Service account key (JSON)RequiredSecret

Google Cloud console, IAM and Admin, Service accounts, the account, Keys, Add key, Create new key, JSON. Paste the whole file. Its client_email is the address you invite in Play Console.

Package nameRequired

The Android package name, as shown under the app's name in Play Console.

Secrets are stored encrypted in your workspace, in a vault kept separate from the application database. Sondola never shows them again.

Permissions

  • View app information (read-only) for your app in Play Console.
  • The Google Play Developer Reporting API turned on in your Cloud project.

Refresh and first reading

Once a day. Most tools refresh once or twice a day, and every number shows when it was read.

Save and test lists the apps the service account can see and checks yours is among them. Crash and ANR rates are Google's own 7-day and 28-day user-weighted rates, read on the last day of each week or month in Pacific time, the only zone Google allows for them. Install counts are not in any Google Play API, so they are not read.

Troubleshooting

The test passes but no reading appears.

Google Play is a Pick the metric source. A working connection produces nothing until you choose a metric and its period. Then check the metric's reporting period and the source's data-through date.

A number differs from Google Play.

Compare the definition, unit and reporting period with the same number in Google Play before treating a difference as an error. When a stored reading changes, its history keeps the old value, the new value and the reason.
